How to perform a complete shutdown in Windows 8 / Windows 8

In Windows 8, when you shut down your computer, you’re actually performing a hybrid shutdown. What is hybrid shutdown? As you may have heard, Windows 8 boots a lot faster than Windows 7 and earlier versions of Windows.

This is due to the way it turns off. Instead of doing a cold boot where everything has to be loaded i.e. OS kernel, applications etc., Windows 8 implements a partial hibernation where the Kernel session and device drivers are saved to plate.

When you start Windows 8, it will load up from that hibernation file, making boot times much faster.

In previous versions of Windows, the hibernate file was much larger because in addition to the kernel and device drivers, all application data was also stored in the file. Now the file is smaller, the load time is better.

This feature is called Fast Startup in Windows 8 and is enabled by default. You can check this out by going to Energy options in the Control Panel and click Choose what the power button does in the left pane.

Scroll down and you’ll see a checked box that says Enable fast startup (recommended). Note that if you don’t have the Enable fast startup check box at all, it’s because hibernation is not enabled.

To enable hibernation in Windows 8, open an elevated command prompt and enter the following line:

powercfg / ngủ đông trên

Now when you go to Power Options you will see the box shown and checked. So how to perform a complete shutdown in Windows 8? There are three ways.

1. You can disable fast startup from Power Options or

2. You can just do a reboot instead of a shutdown.

3. You can use the following command at the command prompt:

As odd as it may seem, restarting Windows 8 will first perform a full shutdown followed by a cold boot. So those are the different ways you can perform a full shutdown of Windows 8, which is useful if you recently installed a new piece of hardware, etc.
